Lisa Chen is a Partner at Dr. Ted Injury Law and a key member of the firm's medical malpractice litigation team. Based primarily out of the firm's Raleigh office, Lisa brings a unique perspective to medical negligence cases: before becoming an attorney, she worked as a registered nurse for four years at UNC Medical Center. This combination of medical training and legal expertise makes her one of the most effective medical malpractice attorneys in North Carolina. Lisa grew up in Cary, North Carolina, the daughter of immigrants who owned a small restaurant in downtown Cary. She learned the value of hard work and perseverance from her parents, who sacrificed everything to give their children opportunities they never had. Lisa initially pursued a career in healthcare, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNC Chapel Hill and working in the intensive care unit at UNC Medical Center. During her time as a nurse, Lisa witnessed several instances where patients were harmed by preventable medical errors. She saw how these errors devastated families and how the healthcare system often failed to hold itself accountable. Motivated by a desire to advocate for patients in a different way, Lisa enrolled at Wake Forest University School of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Since joining Dr. Ted Injury Law in 2008, Lisa has recovered more than $100 million for victims of medical negligence. Her notable results include a $6.8 million verdict against a Raleigh-area surgical center for a botched spinal surgery, a $4.5 million settlement for the parents of a child who suffered brain damage due to a delayed C-section, and a $3.9 million recovery for a patient who developed a life-threatening infection after a surgeon failed to follow proper sterilization protocols. Lisa's nursing background is invaluable in her legal practice. She can review medical records with the eye of a trained clinician, identifying deviations from the standard of care that might escape the notice of attorneys without medical training. She speaks the language of medicine fluently, which allows her to communicate effectively with expert witnesses and to explain complex medical concepts to jurors in plain, relatable terms. Beyond her technical skills, Lisa is known for the genuine care she shows her clients. Many of the families she represents are going through the most difficult period of their lives, dealing with the aftermath of a medical error that may have left a loved one permanently injured or deceased. Lisa takes the time to listen, to answer questions, and to guide her clients through every step of the legal process with patience and compassion. Lisa has been recognized as a North Carolina Super Lawyer Rising Star and has been named to the full Super Lawyers list since 2016. She is a member of the American Association for Justice, the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, and the North Carolina Association of Trial Lawyers. She has published articles in the North Carolina Bar Journal on topics related to medical malpractice litigation and has presented at numerous CLE seminars across the state. Lisa is deeply involved in the Triangle community. She volunteers with the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities and serves on the board of the Asian American Community Foundation of the Triangle. She is also a mentor for pre-law students at UNC Chapel Hill. Lisa and her husband, David, an emergency medicine physician, live in North Raleigh with their two sons. In her free time, Lisa enjoys trail running in Umstead State Park, practicing yoga, and experimenting with recipes from her parents' restaurant that she hopes to someday compile into a cookbook.
